Key Stage 4 Humanities
Pupils have the option of choosing from three GCSE subjects in Humanities;
All pupils are entered for the Philosophy and Ethics Short Course GCSE.
Geography GCSE AQA Specification A (Final Year)
The modules we study are:
- Physical Geography:
- Glaciation
- Coasts
- Plate Tectonics
- Human Geography:
- Settlements
- Industry
- Managing Resources
- We also have a skills module which includes:
- Mapwork
- Drawing and interpreting graphs and other data
- Describing and explaining information from photographs
All pupils study the same modules. However the pupils are entered for different level of examinations. There is a Higher paper and a Foundation paper.Course work contributes 25% to the final mark and the pupils are taken out on a field visit to collect data for this.
Geography OCR Pilot Geography GCSE
A new course introduced September 2006. In year 10 we study:
My Place – a personalised geography of the local area and its links to the rest of the world.
Extreme Environments – a study of the processes and landscapes in a mountainous area and how people have adapted to live there.
Our decisions as consumers – Our rights and responsibilities as consumersFor each module there will be an assessment and at the end of Y10 will be an examination. The examination will be based on the above modules and a pre-released resource booklet.
In year 11 all the pupils will complete a fieldwork module and will then have the choice from:
- Planning where we live
- Urban transport for sustainability
- Living with floods
- Introducing Cultural Geography
All the modules in Y11 are coursework assessment and there is no exam.
Pupils study AQA Option B Modern World History. There are two exams. One at the end of Year 10 and one at the end of Year 11. The examinations are worth 75% of the total grade awarded.
In Year 10 pupils study International Relations 1919-1955. This includes:
- Peacemaking 1918-1919 and the League of Nations
- Hitler’s foreign policy and the origins of the Second World War
- The origins of the Cold War 1945-1955
In year 11 pupils undertake depth studies in 4 of the following areas:
- The Roaring Twenties: USA 1919-1929
- Stalin’s Dictatorship: USSR 1924-1941
- Hitler’s Germany: 1929-1939
- Depression and the New Deal: The USA, 1929–1941
- The USA and Vietnam: Failure abroad and at home: 1964-1975
Pupils also complete a Controlled Assessment using sources and interpretations on the Home Front during World War I and World War II which makes up the final 15% of their grade.
Leisure and Tourism
The Leisure and Tourism course provides students with the opportunity to study the world of Leisure. Throughout the course students will learn about how different activities and components make up the leisure and Tourism industry. Pupils have the opportunity to use life experience in their learning and develop many new skills that can be transferred to the world of work. Pupils are entered for the Edexcel Applied Leisure and Tourism (Double Award) GCSE. The Modules we study are:Investigating Leisure and Tourism (Exam)

Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics Short Course)
Our GCSE course provides opportunities for pupils to discover how the beliefs of religions affect the ways in which believers make decisions about moral issues and lead their lives. Throughout the course pupils will learn how to interpret and evaluate pieces of information, communicate and apply their knowledge and implement critical thinking and problem solving skills.
All pupils are entered for the OCR Philosophy & Ethics Short Course GCSE which was introduced in September 2003.
