PSHEE
Personal Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) provides a vital foundation for the personal development of young people in preparing them for adult life. PSHEE is important in combating the social exclusion and disaffection of any pupil, with the capacity to equip all young people with the skills and attitudes needed to react positively to the pressures of modern life.
The non-statutory guidelines consist of a framework for personal, social and health education for Key Stages 3 and 4. Pupils develop knowledge, skills and understanding in the following areas:
- developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities
- developing a healthy, safer lifestyle
- developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people.
Aims of PSHEE
To help pupils to lead confident, healthy and responsible lives as individuals and members of society. The programmes of study help pupils to:
- live healthily and deal with the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face as they approach adulthood
- reflect on their experiences and how they are developing
- understand and manage responsibly a wider range of relationships as they mature
- show respect for the diversity of, and differences between, people
- develop pupils’ well-being and self-esteem, encouraging belief in their ability to succeed
- take responsibility for their learning and future choice of courses and career.
- learn about themselves as growing and changing individuals and as members of their communities with more maturity, independence and power.

- Time is given for pupils to reflect, consolidate and apply their learning
- Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and to record their own progress
- Attention is given to developing a safe and secure classroom climate

Assessment Reporting and Recording
- As with any learning process assessment of pupils’ personal, social and emotional development is important. It provides information which indicates pupils’ progress and achievement and informs the development of the programme.
- Pupils do not pass or fail within this area but have the opportunity to reflect on their own learning and personal experiences and to set personal goals and agree strategies to reach them. The process of assessment has a positive impact on pupil’s self awareness and self esteem.
- Celebration of achievement contributes to building pupils’ self esteem, developing a sense of community and belonging, helps create a positive atmosphere in the school and develops pupil’s sense of pride. A portfolio of self monitoring, self evaluation sheets and appropriate work are accumulated over the five years.
- KS3 cross curricular citizenship is assessed using the statutory national curriculum levels on the topic of Rights and Responsibilities in Year 9.
- PSHE and Citizenship are reported to parents via end of year tutor reports.
